Just as our human body deserves to be treated with respect and dignity in life, so should it be treated in death. Burial of the deceased's body or ashes in a Catholic cemetery shows respect for what God has created. For the living, Catholic cemeteries provide familiar symbols of faith which can offer spiritual support in a time of bereavement. It is a place where family and friends can gather in prayer to support one another and to commend their loved ones to the mercy of our God.
As people of faith, our burial places have an important meaning for us, since they are sacred places. Each visit to the cemetery can be a reminder of the love, fellowship and faith we shared with those who have died. It is also a reminder of our own mortality and our firm belief in the Resurrection of the dead.
Today you will be with Me in Paradise, says the Lord Jesus.
